Following the Dream's Lead
According to Sigmund Freud, dreams are the "royal road" to the unconscious, and some say to the soul. Dreams, given to us in the dark, night after night, reveal what we can't see in the bright light of the day. Even so, when we are in the world of dreams, the images can be so luminous and exquisitely detailed, we wake up not believing we were in a dream. At other times our dreams draw us in with fantastic or grotesque images. Dreams do this magical work to capture our imagination, to call us to pay attention to their wisdom and powerful presences, and to lead us more fully into our lives.
The dream itself unfolds with the attention we give it in a dream session, leading the way into the mystery of the dream and what it is trying to reveal. Rather than interpreting the dream with our ideas of what we already know, we give the dream its own space to lead us down into hidden places that are normally unavailable to our waking world consciousness.
